With winds exceeding 185 mph and a storm surge of 18-20 feet, the Category 5 hurricane obliterated entire islands, leaving a trail of destruction\u2014and over 400 dead, including hundreds of World War I veterans sent there for work.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This was the Labor Day Hurricane, a storm so intense it still holds the record for the lowest barometric pressure (892 mb) ever recorded at U.S. landfall. But beyond the staggering statistics lies a tragedy of human error, failed rescues, and a storm so fierce it reshaped hurricane forecasting forever.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"the-storm-that-defied-belief\">The Storm That Defied Belief<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"a-hurricane-like-no-other\">A Hurricane Like No Other<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Rapid Intensification: Just 36 hours before landfall, it was a tropical storm. By Labor Day, it was a Category 5 beast\u2014something almost unheard of in 1935.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>892 Millibars: Lower pressure than Katrina (2005), Andrew (1992), or Camille (1969)\u2014making it the strongest U.S. hurricane by pressure.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Winds Beyond Measure: Anemometers were destroyed, but damage suggested 200+ mph gusts.
